Kochi, Aug09, 2019: Cochin International Airport (CIAL) here have been suspended all itsflight operations till Sunday evening as floodwaters inundated the parkingarea. The airport will remain closed till 3 pm on Sunday.
Flightscoming to the airport have been diverted, a CIAL spokesperson said. OnThursday, the airport suspended its flight operations at 9 am as aprecautionary measure in view of the heavy rain and the rising levels in thePeriyar and the canal Chengalthodu running alongside the airport.
UAE flights cancelled
ADubai-Kochi flight was diverted to Trivandrum International Airport whileKochi-Abu Dhabi flight that was supposed to fly in the morning got cancelled.
“CochinInternational Airport has shut operations as water has entered taxiway. Aflight from Kochi is yet to arrive here in Abu Dhabi. This will affect thereturning flight. Many passengers would have already checked-in at Abu DhabiInternational Airport. We are trying our best to manage the situation,” anAir India official from Abu Dhabi said.
From Dubai,flydubai (FZ 441), Emirates (EK 532), SpiceJet, Indigo (6E 068) were cancelledwhile Etihad flight (EY 280) from Abu Dhabi and Air Arabia and Air India (IX412) flights from Sharjah were cancelled.
During theAugust 2018 flood, the airport was shut down for a fortnight and loss wasestimated at Rs Rs 250 crore.
