Kochi, Jul 20 : A section of priests of the Syro Malabar Churchm who are on an indefinite hunger strike, called off it on Saturday following an assurance from the permanent synod that their grievances will be addressed in its next meeting.
Talking to newspersons here, Fr Kuriakose Mundadan said the synod held an unconditional discussions with the agitating priests and heard their complaints patiently. The priests began the indefinite hunger strike seeking the removal of major archbishop Cardinal George Alencherry from the responsibility of Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese.
The discussion was held by Bishops in the presence of Permanent Synod, representatives in Mount St.Thomas and 9 priests representing 451 priests in the archdiocese. The synod also assurred to consider reinstating the suspended auxiliary bishops as per the direction from Vatican.
The dissenting priests alleged that the Cardinal was involved in 14 cases including in financial misappropriations in connection with a land deal.Earlier also they passed a resolution against the Vatican's decision to reinstate Cardinal George Alencherry as major archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese. In a meeting of forane priests called by Cardinal Alencherry recently, the priests said the Cardinal's explanation was not satisfactory and asked to step down from the post.
Though Alencherry was removed from the responsibility following an allegation against him in connection with irregularities in the land deal, he was reinstated into the post by the Vatican. (UNI)
