Priests launch hunger strike against cardinal Alencherry

Dissent brewing in Syro Malabar Church has spilled out with a group of priests launching a hunger strike against Cardinal George Alencherry.

They gathered outside the Bishop House in Kochi, demanding divestation of his rights in the Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese.

Dissent had been growing against Alencherry over a land scam and this was further aggravated when he was reinstated after being kept out for some time by Then he Vatican. Around 200 priests who had gathered a few weeks ago had said they would not obey pastoral letters issued by Alencherry.

The priests on hunger strike said there were 14 cases against him and should not be allowed to continue to be in charge of Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese.

They pointed out that two inquiry reports against Alencherry were with the Vatican. No action had been taken on these and yet he was reinstated which was not acceptable. The priests wanted him to stay away from responsibilities in the archdiocese.
