Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 13 : A Secretariat march taken out by AISF, the student wing of Communist Party of India (CPI), in protest against the criminal activities by SFI leaders in the University College, turned violent here on Saturday.

Police resorted to water canon several times when a large number of AISF activists including girl students tried to break the barricades in front of the Secretariat. The students who injured in the police action have been shifted to the Government General Hospital here. The AISF activists, who also demanded the arrest of absconding SFI leaders involved in the stabbing of their fellow student, staged the protest march against the SFI for not allowing others to function in the University College.

The University College in the heart of the Capital City witnessed a sudden spurt of violence after two groups of SFI activists clashed each other and that led to the stabbing of a third year student on Friday morning. Meanwhile, SFI All India President VP Sanu on Friday said the unit of SFI in the University College will be dissolved in the wake of clashes between the two groups.

The final year degree student of political science and SFI activist, Akhil, sustained two stab injuries on his chest by another group in the University campus which witnessed a series of protest marches seeking the arrest of SFI leaders involved in the crime. The condition of Akhil admitted to the Medical College Hospital here is said to be out of danger.

The clashes occurred following a dispute between the two groups on a song sung at the canteen on Thursday evening. Though two groups were involved in a mediation talk, they could not reach a consensus leading to clashes between them. Meanwhile, the College Principal said he was not aware about the clashes and urged media to stay away from campus.

However, a section of students alleged that the SFI leaders stored a large number of lethal weapons in the campus.

A police team on Saturday entered the College Campus and filed a FIR in connection with the stabbing incident and took the statements from a student named Akhil and a few students who witnessed the crime. The FIR says the SFI goons attacked Akhil with the intention to murder him for not obeying the instructions of SFI college unit. Reacting to the media reports that CPI(M) leaders were trying to save the criminals, father of the injured student, Chandran, said he will go ahead with the case and was not ready for any compromise.

Chandran, who is also a staunch loyalist of CPI (M), said he was worried about the health condition of his son, who is also a powerlifting champion. Meanwhile, girl students in the University College alleged that the SFI students were not allowing them to wear jeans or leggings. Those who oppose the SFI leaders are brutally beaten, they added.A 30-member team of goons used to raise funds through extortion, and male students are not allowed to talk with their female classmates, they added.
