The Kerala Government has massively slashed the fine slapped on former minister and NCP leader Thomas Chandy for illegal construction on his controversial Lake Palace resort in Alappuzha.
As part of undue favours to the former minister, the government cancelled the Alappuzha municipality order imposing a fine of more than Rs 1 crore on Lake Palace. Instead, it is said to have brought it down to Rs 34 lakh, thereby giving Chandy a benefit of more than Rs 66 lakh.
The order overruling the municipality and favouring Chandy was issued by the Additional Chief Secretary.
The Government had earlier decided to regularise the illegal construction of the resort through a penalty. It was on this basis that the municipality proposed a fine of Rs 2.76 crore but later slashed it to Rs 1.17 crore.
Chandy approached the Government for a review which resulted in its bringing down the penalty to Rs 34 lakh and issued the necessary official order.
