It is dissidence growing in the Syro-Malabar Church in Kerala, a never-before-seen thing, rattling the diocese.
A group of dissident priests in the Syro-Malabar Church are up in arms and have gone public in voicing their opposition to the return of George Alencherry as cardinal of the archdiocese. Creating a history of sorts, dissident priests held a meeting in Kochi on Tuesday. It was more than 200 priests who gathered. Condemning the side lining of several auxiliary bishops, the dissidents wanted an explanation for this. They even threatened to take to the streets if false cases were hoisted against them.
Alencherry's reinstatement as Cardinal "in the cover of darkness" was 'disgraceful', they said. Moreover, the probe report regarding the land deal was yet to be made public.
They have threatened to boycott functions and follow pastoral letters issued by Alencherry. They have also made clear their dissent to the Vatican reappointing Alencherry even when the land deal remained under cloud.
Moves to bifurcate the Angamaly archdiocese would not be accepted, they asserted.
