Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 1 : The opposition -- Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) members staged a walkout from Kerala Assembly on Monday in protest against the Government denial in declaring a judicial probe into the custodial death at Peerumedu sub jail on June 21 in Idukki district.
Seeking the leave of the House to move the adjournment motion in this regard, VD Satheesan of Congress said the ongoing probe into the crime is ineffective as the policemen involved in the custodial death are probing the case.
In his reply, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the Government will not protect the police officials involved in the crime.
Opposition leader, who demanded the judicial probe, said the SP of Idukki should be removed from the probe team and the CPI leaders from Idukki district are also not satisfied with the investigation.
VD Satheesan said the 49-year-old Rajkumar, an accused in a financial fraud, was kept in custody for 105 hours without following the proper procedures.
The family of the victim who sought a meeting with the chief minister this day alleged that he was subjected to severe torture in the custody, Chennithala added.
Following the Chief Minister's reply, Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan denied permission to move the adjournment motion.
In protest against the Government stand not declaring the judicial probe, the Opposition members staged the walkout. (UNI)
