Sexual assault cases are haunting the CPM which has been shell-shocked by the Binoy Kodiyeri incident. In Parur in Ernakulam district, police on Thursday registered a case under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against a CPM panchayat member for assaulting a Class X girl student. He is now absconding.

VR Sunil Raj is a member of ward 10 of Ezhikkara panchayat. The party convened a meeting and expelled Sunil Raj, who was once a branch secretary of Nettayikkonam.

The incident is said to have happened this January. Suni Raj is said to have come to the girl's house as her mother's friend. He grabbed the girl and assaulted her, according to the charge.

When the girl told her grandmother about this, the family registered a police complaint. Sunil Raj went absconding immediately after he learnt about police registering the case.

Charges of insulting a woman and voluntarily causing hurt were registered against Sunil. The magistrate also recorded the girl's statement.
