Two electrocuted; heavy rains continue in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, June 10: Two people died in rain related incidents in Kerala that witnessed heavy rains especially in southern districts after the set-in of monsoon in the state, sources said here on Monday.

Two people electrocuted after touching a street pole which fell in rainwater at Pettah during the heavy rains lashing the city. The victims were identified as Radhakrishnan hailing from Pettah and Presanna Kumari of Nedumangad in this district.

Meanwhile, Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) announced solatium of Rs 10 lakh each to the bereaved families of the victims. Two lakh will be made available as an immediate aid to victims' families.

A few houses were also damaged at Valiyathura coastal area after sea turned rough following heaving rains. Heavy rains lashed many places in the southern districts causing traffic blockage, uprooting of trees, coastal erosion and water logging in low lying areas.

Fear and sleepless nights continue for fisher-folk in areas like Valiyathura, Shanghumugham and Poonthura as their homes could be taken away by the sea anytime. The sea walls were completely broken in several places on southern coast.
