According to the India Meteorological Department, the monsoon is likely to be delayed by a week and to make the onset over the south Kerala coast on June 8.
The weather department had earlier forecast its onset over the Kerala coast on June 6. The monsoon usually makes the onset on June 1.
'The eastwest shear zone between 3.1 & 4.5 km above mean sea level roughly along Lat. 7°N across Maldives-Comorin area persists. It is very likely to shift northwards gradually leading to favourable conditions for the onset of Southwest Monsoon over Kerala around June 8,' the IMD bulletin said.
Conditions are likely to become favourable for its advance into some parts of northeastern states during the next three to four days, it added.The rains will bring respite to several parts of the country reeling under extreme heat wave conditions for the last few days with the temperature touching above 47 degree Celsius. It touched 50 degrees C at Churu in Rajasthan.
