Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 3 : Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) on Monday expelled former MP Abdullakutty from the party for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the victory of BJP-led NDA in the Lok Sabha election.
In a release here, KPCC President Mullappally Ramachandran said party leader Abdullakutty was expelled from the Congress for his pro-Modi remarks.
Abdullakutty had praised Mr Modi stood with his Facebook statement and made sarcastic comments against the Congress leaders who objected his stand.
Earlier, the KPCC President had also sought an explanation from the former MP for not taking action against his Facebook post stating that Mr Modi had applied the Gandhian values in his governance, helping him to win the Lok Sabha election.
In his Facebook post, Abdullakutty said Modi's development programmes and policies like Swachh Bharat and Ujwala Yojana helped the NDA to get the support of poor sections in the society. The massive victory is certainly due to the wide acceptance of Modi's development agenda, he said.
It may be noted that Abdullakutty, who was a CPI (M) MP, had praised Narendra Modi's Gujarat Model Development earlier and was expelled from the party in 2009.Later, he joined the Congress party and became the member of Kerala Assembly from 2011 to 2014.
Reacting to the expulsion, Abdullakutty claimed that his comment was based on progressive steps taken by Mr Modi."I never praised Modi, I highlighted the values and principles of Mahatma Gandhi. The Congress party will realise soon that my statement was not wrong," he added.
Earlier, Congress leaders including K Muraleedharan MP said party leaders praising Narendra Modi will not be acceptable to the party.Congress mouthpiece 'Veekshanam' also wrote an editorial against the MP's remarks. (UNI)
