SHRC takes suo-motu case against doctors for negligence in surgery

Manjeri, May 22 : State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Wednesday registered a suo motu case against the doctors for medical negligence while performing a surgery on a seven-year-old boy on Tuesday.

According to sources, the incident of performing a wrong surgery on the boy had happened in Government hospital here. Instead of operating a cyst in the nose of the boy, the doctors cut open his stomach and performed operation for hernia. The victim of the medical negligence is Muhammed Danish of Karuvarankundu near here.

The medical negligence has been noticed when the doctors of the ENT department found their patient, Danish, missing from the hospital bed and later found him to have had taken to the operation theatre. Consequent to this, the victim - Danish, was brought out from the operation theatre but not before the doctor opening his stomach.

The parents and family members of the boy objected and agitated over the issue. However, the doctors took him back to the theatre and removed the cyst in his nose. The other boy, who was admitted at the same hospital for operating for hernia is a six-year old boy, Danush.

The similarity of the names of the two patients - Danish and Danush, is pointed out to be the reason for the mistake that resulted in the medical negligence. However, the Health authorities had earlier suspended the doctors who had performed the operation without due care. UNI
