Kasaragod, May 20: The Special Investigating Team (SIT) of the crime branch wing, Kerala Police, probing the Periya double murder case, has on Monday submitted the charge sheet in the Hosdurg Magistrate court .

The SIT had implicated as many as 14 persons, including two local CPI (M) leaders of Periya and Uduma. According to SIT sources, the motive behind the crime was personal vendetta.

The case was that a group of people, in connivance with local Marxist leaders, had hacked to death the two Youth Congress workers in Periya - Kripesh and Sarath Lal, on February 17.

The SIT had arrested one among the prime accused - Subeesh, in connection with the murder case at Mangalore airport. He was among the 14 accused who had absconded to the Middle East, making the SIT strive hard to effect his arrest.

Earlier, police had arrested the Uduma Area Committee secretary K Manikantan and Periya Local Committee secretary N Balakrishnan on Tuesday, on charges of destroying evidences and facilitating relocation of the accused after committing the crime.

Earlier, the prime accused and former CPI (M) local committee member A Peethambaran had retracted from his earlier admission of his involvement in the double murder. Peethambaran had earlier admitted that it was he who masterminded and executed the crime along with few others. Consequent to this, the CPI (M) had expelled him from party.

The SIT was under pressure as it was directed by the court to submit the charge sheet in 90 days. However, it succeeded in adhering to the deadline. (UNI)
