Nearly around a year after a youth Kevin, who was to marry Neenu Chacko against her parent's wishes, was found dead in Chaliyakkara river in Punalur, a witness today made a crucial statement against an accused facing murder charge.

Neenu’s neighbour Lijo told the trial court in Pala on Friday that her brother Shanu Chacko had called him up to say that Kevin was killed. The case is that Kevin was abducted and murdered by Neenu’s relatives and their friends.

Kevin (24) of Kottayam was found dead on May 28, 2018. He was abducted and murdered by Neenu’s father Chacko, brother Shanu and his friends. On learning that Kevin and Neenu planned to get married and had filed necessary papers at the registrar's office, they decided to finish him off.

They abducted Kevin and his friend Aneesh in the wee hours of May 27 and took them to Thenmala. However, Aneesh was taken back to Kottayam later. Kevin's body was found in the river the next day.

Shanu and other accused, while admitting that they had taken Kevin, claimed that he had escaped from their custody and might have fallen into the water and died.
But Lijo’s statement made things difficult for them. Lijo said Shanu had called him and conveyed to him that Kevin was murdered. He made a testimony in this regard to the magistrate court in a confidential statement.

Later, Lijo complained that he was threatened in the court by the accused. The magistrate asked him to file a complaint and told the police to ensure the safety of witnesses.
