In a late evening swoop on travel agencies running buses violating permit norms, the motor vehicles department has begun surprise checks at offices of operators. The move follows the brutal assault on three passengers travelling in a Kallada Travels bus late on Saturday.
The enforcement wing of the transport department began inspections at the offices of travel agencies, mostly in Kozhikode.
A fine of Rs 5,000 each was imposed on 46 buses, including three of Kallada Travels. Action against the buses for violating permit norms followed inspection at various check posts. The charges included fleecing passengers and illegally transporting parcels and goods.
The department held inspections under 'Operation Night Ride’ at private booking and travel agencies in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode and issued notices to nine, including that of Kallada in Thiruvanthapuram. Most of the agencies, including the Kallada one in Thiruvanthapuram, were found operating without valid permits and licences.
Already seven staff of Kallada have been in custody in connection with the assault of three youths. They have been charged with attempt to murder. Action was also being taken against Kallada on the basis of posts put out on social media by some passengers. Police are to summon the owner of Kallada Travels in connection with the assault case.
