Kerala High Court on Friday acquitted prime accused Biju Radhakrishnan, known better as the accused in the infamous solar scam, in the case connected with the murder of his wife Reshmi. His mother Rajammal, the second accused in the murder case, was also acquitted. The case of dowry harassment against the two was turned into a murder one after the solar scam surfaced. The court observed that the prosecution failed to prove beyond doubt the charges of murder slapped on the son and mother and there was lack of evidence.
Biju had been found guilty by the Kollam district sessions court on grounds of murdering his wife Reshmi on February 4, 2006. She was found dead at Biju’s residence in Kollam. The couple has two sons. He was sentenced to life-term and had been serving his term at Poojappura jail since early 2014. His mother received a three-year jail term.
Biju was charged under Sections 304 of IPC for murdering his wife, 201 of IPC for destroying evidence and 323 of IPC for child abuse. Rajammal was found guilty under section 498A of IPC for dowry harassment. The prosecution case was that Biju forcibly gave liquor laced with poison to Reshmi and smothered her to death to marry solar scam prime accused Saritha Nair.
