Kerala police on Tuesday filed its chargesheet against Jalandhar ex-bishop Franco Mulakkal in connection with the nun rape case.
The investigative team submitted the chargesheet in Pala Magistrate Court nearly seven months after his arrest and bail. Bishop Mulakkal was arrested in September last year, but later let out on bail. There are six Sections, including rape, illegal detention, unnatural sex, repeated sexual abuse of the same woman and other charges slapped in the 74-page chargesheet.
There are 83 witnesses, including Cardinal Mar George Alencherry and a 1,400-page supplementary of confidential statements. Franco is charged with sexually abusing the nun 13 times between 2014 and 2016 at Kuravilangad convent.
His case has kicked up a row in the State with nuns coming out to the streets and joining a public meeting for his arrest. None of the political parties took sides for fear of losing a vote bank. As a mark of retaliation, the Church singled out the nuns who participated in the agitation and tried to transfer them to different places.
Save Our Sisters, the movement which spearheads the agitation for Franco's arrest says no accused should be shielded by religion.
