Pinarayi stands by old ‘scoundrel’ remark against RSP’s Premachandran

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, after repeating his 'scoundrel' (paranari) remark against RSP leader and UDF Kollam candidate NK Premachandran, has justified it.

There was little doubt, said Pinarayi when asked whether he stood by his remark against Premachandran during the 2014 Lok Sabha election.

The remark Pinarayi made then as CPIM state secretary had attracted widespread criticism and was even considered one small among the main reasons to have caused damage to the party with Premachandran finally defeating CPIM politburo member MA Baby in 2014 Lok Sabha election from Kollam parliamentary constituency.

This time too Pinarayi did not mince words and said, “In politics, probity is important and everyone is expected to have it.” He added that given the ways of Premachandran, damage to be done to the UDF would be worse than that he did to the LDF.

Premachandran was a minister in the previous LDF Government. However, prior to the 2014 Lok Sabha election in 2014, his party RSP moved over to UDF and Premachandran was made the candidate there. An agitated LDF went after him and even crossed limits to tarnish him.

With the LDF finding the going tough, given Premachandran's stature, performance as an MP and his popularity, campaigning by the Left has taken a turn for the worse and is reflected in Pinarayi's insistence on repeating the 2014 remark.
