Top leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party is in favour of nominating Suresh Gopi from Thrissur LS constituency. Veteran actor is summoned to Delhi for final consultations.
When Tushar Vellappally, originally the NDA cansdidate from Thrissur, was asked to file his nomination from Wayanad when Rahul declared is candidature from the hill constituency in Northern Kerala, sandwiched between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
A section of the party leadership had suggested putting up Tom Vadakkan, who recently shifted his loyalties to Narendra Modi, as there is a sizeable Christian population in the constituency. However after the Sabarimala agitation over entry of women of a particular age group to the shrine, the BJP has improved its support base in Thrissur. The top leadership of the BJP felt that it better to rely on the Hindu base as the party may not be able to transfer these votes if a Christian candidate is put up from this constituency,
However it will also depend on the willingness of Suresh Gopi to contest. He had earlier expressed his reluctance to be a candidate from Thiruvananthapuram constituency to take on Shashi Tharoor.
