in a swift move that could put Congress and some of it prospective candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha in a piquant situation, Crime Branch police have charged cases against three Congress MLAs in the solar scam and sexual assault case.
The three Congress MLAs, Hibi Eden, Adoor Prakash and AP Anil Kumar, all probable candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, were charged on Thursday with the Crime Branch submitting the FIR in the special court in Kochi dealing with cases of people's representatives.
The First Investigation Report was earlier filed against Oommen Chandy and KC Venugopal, MP. The case this time came all of a sudden and is against three who have been tipped as Congress candidates. Party leaders have been quick to respond, saying the case was ill-motivated. Fearing defeat, the LDF moved against the three to “spoil their political future”.
The case is on the basis of the complaint registered by Saritha alleging sexual harassment by these MLAs after offering her help to set up solar panel business. Part of a solar company, Team Solar, Saritha had been arrested in 2013.
Under the election rule, candidates are to make public cases registered against them and in this particular incident, the MLAs, if contesting in the elections, will have to come out with this case of sexual harassment.
The scam came out during the earlier Congress-led UDF regime under Chandy was the Chief Minister. The LDF, then in the Opposition, had made this a plank for campaign during the 2014 Assembly elections.
