Agency News

Malappuram, Mar 14 : An expert team of Health Officials from Thiruvananthapuram has on Thursday reached Thirurangadi near here where a seven-year old boy was reportedly inflicted with West Nile Virus (WNV).

The team has inspected the wells in the vicinity of the area where the house of the boy was situated. The boy was admitted to medical college hospital in Kozhikode early this week. It was on Wednesday that the virus was confirmed in the boy.

The team, who found some wells with mosquito presence, has cautioned the people to be alert against the menace. The virus was first reported in India in 1952 in Mumbai and in Alappuzha in Kerala in 2011.

WNV was first isolated in a woman in the West Nile district of Uganda in 1937. Human infection is most often the result of bites from infected culex mosquitoes. (UNI)
