Putting an end to the uncertainty over the Opposition UDF candidate for the Kannur Lok Sabha seat, senior Congress leader K Sudharakan has announced his candidature.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee working president Sudharakan, who had earlier said he was not contesting the poll this time, went back on his words, announced his candidature at Kannur railway station on Wednesday, mainly after the party High Command asked him to be in the fray to take on CPIM leader and sitting member PK Sreemathi.
He said though the official announcement was yet to be made, the people's response was indication of their acceptance. As a candidate, the response from activists shows that they have accepted him and he thanked them for it. He said this election in Kerala was against two fascist powers who practised politics of violence and breach of promises
According party sources, Sudharakan had wanted to stay in state politics eyeing the post of KPCC president in case Mullappally Ramachandran is to contest from Badagara. However, with the latter announcing that he would not be in the fray, Sudharakan's hopes have been shattered and so are to take the electoral plunge.
