Bringing an end to a long-drawn battle between the groups within the Kerala Congress (M) for the Kottayam Lok Sabha seat, party chairman KM Mani officially announced Thomas Chazhikkadan as the candidate.
Mani made the announcement through a statement after a party high committee meeting. He was firm in not giving the seat to party working president PJ Joseph who went open in his stake for the seat for candidature till the last minute. Chazhikkadan is a four-time MLA from Ettumanoor constituency.
Later, Joseph said the decision to field Chazhikkadan was an ‘injustice’ . "The announcement of the candidate through a press statement was unprecedented. I have utter angst in the decision. It was without any discussions with other parties within the UDF. The decision of not allowing a candidate outside the district cannot be accepted. “Though an outsider, Roshi Augustine had contested from Idukki," he added.
“I expect the decision will be corrected. I am also a strong contender in the UDF. I will make an appropriate decision after discussing the issue within UDF,” Joseph said.
Separately, Chazhikkadan said the party would face the election in unison.
