The State government on Friday ordered a Crime Branch (CB) inquiry into the death of suspected Maoist C. P. Jaleel, 26, in a purported firefight with police commandos near a forest resort at Lakkidi in Wayanad late Wednesday.

Meanwhile, an inquest by the police concluded that Jaleel had died from gunshot wounds in his head, back and thigh. The police said they found his body lying face down near a pond a little away from the resort. The bullets had hit him from behind, and the shot to his head had proven fatal almost instantaneously.

The police claimed to have found a country-made breach loading-handheld shotgun and eight shells from near the body along with a few blasting caps commonly used for detonating dynamite used in granite quarries.

The body of Jaleel was buried near hear house at Pandikkad in Malappuram on Friday afternoon. On Friday morning, doctors attached to the Department of Forensic Medicine of the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, carried out a postmortem examination of the body. After several hours of official procedures the body was released to his relatives by noon.
