Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 9 : Former Minister for Local Administration in Kerala VJ Thankappan, passed away due to old-age illness at his house in Neyyatinkara near here on Saturday.

He was 87. He is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.

Thankappan was elected as an MLA on CPI(M) ticket and served as a Minister in the EK Nayanar Government from 1987 to 1991.

Thankappan became a member of the seventh Kerala Legislative Assembly by winning a by-election held in Nemom in 1983. Later, he represented the same seat in 1987 and in 1991.

He had served as Councillor of Neyyattinkara Municipality from 1968-79, and as its Chairman from 1979-84.

The former Minister was also the Chairman for a Committee on Papers Laid on the Table from 1995-1996 and the Vice- Chairman of Third Administrative Reforms Committee, and Committee on Decentralisation of Administration. (UNI)
