Kerala’s Marayoor Jaggery gets GI tag


A world-famous delicacy, the Marayoor jaggery, a traditional and handmade product from Idukki district of Kerala has finally got the Geographical Indication (GI) tag from central government.

High sweetness sans salty taste, high iron content, less sodium, less soluble impurities, organic method of production are the special features of this product.

Produced in Marayoor, this jaggery is made from sugarcane and no chemicals are added during the manufacturing process. Mostly, workers from Udumalpet in Tamil Nadu are engaged in the production of the Marayoor jaggery.

It is learnt that the GI tag came for the product after two years of continuous effort by the Agricultural department. “The GI tag will provide more windows of opportunity to the traditional sugarcane farmers in Marayoor,” Kerala state Agricultural Minister VS Sunilkumar said.
