A massive fire broke out at a footwear godown in the heart of Kochi city near Ernakulam South railway station this morning posing a big threat to shops nearby. No casualties were reported.
Fire force personnel were trying hard to douse the fire at the six-storey building of Paragon footwear godown. The fire was posing a serious threat to buildings nearby and work on the Kochi Metro came to a halt.
Smoke was billowing and police evacuated workers from buildings nearby. Sources said the situation was not under control and there was fear of the fire spreading in spite of the fire tenders spraying jets of water.
More fire force units, including those from the Navy would be rushed in to not just douse the fire but also prevent damage to others in the vicinity. Though rail traffic remained uninterrupted, bus and other private services around the area were stopped.
