Kochi, Feb 14: The Idukki district committee of the CPIM has reprimanded S Rajendran, MLA, for his recent verbal abuse of Devikulam sub-collector Renu Raj.
The party issued a strict warning and also directed him not to express his personal opinion publicly. His intervention when an official team led by Renu came to prevent an illegal construction and driving them away, and after their leaving abusing Renu and calling her a foolish and unintelligent woman who was being arrogant on the back of her IAS rank has landed him in trouble. A contempt move is on from the part of the Government as he obstructed implementation of a court order against illegal construction.
His comments against the woman bureaucrat came at a time when the party was upholding renaissance values and championing the cause of gender equality. The party was forced to take action even his mentor and Minister had made derogatory remarks against women and no action was taken then.
Party state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan had also said action would be taken against Rajendran for the derogatory remarks. He had sought an explanation from the district committee.
Party district committee secretary Jayachandran was among the first to react and had said the party would look into the matter and seek an explanation. A defiant Rajendran initially stood by his comments but later, sensing public and party mood, apologised, which again lacked sincerity.
The CPI and its leader and Revenue Minister E Chandrasekharan had backed Renu to the hilt. The latest move of the Government for contempt of court proceedings added to Rajendran's woes. And with the Lok Sabha elections round the corner, the party cannot afford to get flogged on anti-renaissance grounds.
