The verbal abuse of Devikulam sub-collector Renu Raj by CPM legislator S Rajendran on Saturday is snowballing into a crisis with the party deciding to seek an explanation from the MLA.
While Rajendran said he would take up the matter with the Speaker, Renu has taken up the matter with the Revenue Secretary and the Idukki District Collector. She would be filing an official complaint on Monday along with video clippings.
CPM district secretary KK Jayachandran said the party found it difficult to accept “misbehaviour” and would look into if Rajendran, known like the other legislator from the district and Electricity Minister MM Mani for foot in mouth, spoke in an improper manner.
He said the party would seek an explanation from Rajendran. His intervention in several encroachment cases has put the party in big embarrassment many a time. Jayachandran made it clear that the party would not intervene in legal matters, including land encroachment.
Rajendran on Saturday said publicly that Renu was an unintelligent and arrogant woman. He made these utterances when the revenue team arrived to block the construction of panchayat shopping complex on which there existed a stop memo.
However, the MLA claimed the sub-collector had insulted him and he had spoken as an ‘ordinary citizen’.
The revenue team was blocked and sent back by a team led by the MLA and the panchayat president. It was then that he abused her. He later said he would complain to the Speaker.
The LDF constituent CPI has also turned against the MLA. CPI Idukki district secretary KK Sivaraman said his party could not accept any act which lent support to illegal construction and lambasted Rajendran for his remarks.
