Kollam, Feb 2 : Vice President Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Kollam Press Club here on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, Naidu said core values of journalism are getting eroded due to business interests of newspapers and TV channels, and the influence of political parties.
Urging journalists' bodies to take a serious introspection on it, he exhorted the journalist community to end its negativity.
He also urged the media to take a positive approach to bring people ‘s issues to the notice of the government as part of exposing the shortcomings in the system and promoting accountability.
"Now a days, truthful reportage has become a casualty due to a cocktail of commercial interests, ideological leanings and the insane scramble for breaking stories," he felt.
Calling upon the media to reduce the gap between the Government and the media, he said democracy will prosper only when all kinds of opinions are allowed to express freely.
Stressing the need of providing more importance to vulnerable and marginalised sections of society, he said journalists should fight against all evils in the society and work without fear or favour.
Pointing out that paid news and biased coverage have become the problems of modern day journalism, he said journalists must guard against fake news. However, millions of people are using social media
He also criticised media's deliberate attempt to mix news and views becoming new normal.
Urging the media houses to come out with a code of conduct for journalists he said decent salary is a must to attract talented youths to this profession.
