10 of family from Kannur leave to join IS, 4 killed

Reports of Keralites, especially from Kannur, making it to join terrorist organisation Islamic State (IS) have been pouring in regularly. The latest is that 10 members of a Kannur family, including women, their husbands and children, joined IS and four of them have died.

According to police, Popular Front leaders TV Shameer and Anvar, their wives and children joined IS. The two leaders and two children of Shameer were killed. Police have no information about the women in the team.

Initially, Shameer and family went to join IS and were followed by Anvar and family on November 19. Police believe that a team from Kannur left for Syria through Iran.

However, IS cadre are said to be shifting to Afghanistan as their bases in Syria were under constant attack.

Anvar, his wife who was carrying and three children left, claiming they were on a trip to Mysuru and Bengaluru and then were found missing.

Police began a probe on the basis of a complaint by their family members and have now stepped up the investigation.
