Kasaragod, Jan 28 : A group of women, mothers of Endosulfan-victims in this district will once again launch a fast-unto-death agitation from January 30 to invite the attention of the Kerala government against its neglect on them.
The mothers of the children affected by endosulfan-induced deformities, have since for long been demanding early implementation of the orders of the Supreme Court and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
While the Apex Court had awarded a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the victims, the NHRC had directed facilitation of other benefits including rehabilitation of the victims, most of whom are either physically paralysed or mentally retarded or both.
According to the environmental activists, there has been attempts to dilute or neglect the legitimate rights of the victims over these years. The new fast-unto-death agitation, beginning on Wednesday, is aimed at putting pressure on the government to expedite the implementation of benefits to the victims, whose life has been miserable for years, Endosulfan Peeditha Janakeeya Munnani Secretary Ambalathara Kunjikrishanan pointed out.
With Right Activist like Daya Bai also joining the fray said, the plight of the endosulfan victims and the voice of their mothers would once again be heard loud and clear in the air. (UNI)
