Activists of various organisations have planned to conduct protest gatherings on December 14 and 15 as part of the agitation seeking release of Rehana Fathima, currently in jail over posts hurting religious sentiments. She had made a failed attempt to visit Sabarimala.
On December 14, a gathering will be held in Kozhikode and the next day in Ernakulam by the 'Free Rehana Fathima Action Council'. Earlier, as part of the International Human Rights Day, a similar kind of meeting was held in Thrissur on December 10.
Many social workers are expected to participate in the December 14 meeting which include Anweshi president K Ajitha, Viji Penkoott, writers, activists such as P Geetha and MG Mallika.
Rehana, a BSNL employee, was taken into custody from her office on November 27 and remanded in judicial custody. Pathanamthitta police registered a case punishable under Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion and religious beliefs). Before visiting Sabarimala, a picture posted on Facebook which is alleged to have hurt the sentiments of Ayyappa devotees landed Rehana in trouble.
