Rehana Fathima, the activist who attempted to make it to Sabarimala in October and had to give up halfway in the midst of protests, was arrested by Pathanamthitta police on Tuesday on charges of hurting religious sentiments.
The arrest was made from her residence in Kochi after the High Court recently rejected her anticipatory bail petition recently. She was taken to Pathanamthitta for interrogation.
She was charged with insulting religious beliefs on October 20 when she shared a few posts along with her photographs on Facebook, hurting religious sentiments. Rehana, a model and activist and BSNL employee, posted her picture on Facebook on September 30, dressed like an Ayyappa devotee with a caption 'Tatwamasi'. The Sabarimala Samrakshana Samiti filed a complaint alleging that her social media posts hurt their religious sentiments.
A case was registered under Section 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) IPC. Rehana moved the High Court on October 30 for anticipatory bail and this was rejected on November 16. It also gave the go-ahead to police for necessary action.
