The police chief in Pathanamthitta has favoured extending the prohibitory orders to January 14 at four places as part of the ongoing Sabarimala pilgrimage.
The prohibitory orders clamped under Section 144 at Sannidhanam, Pamba, Nilackal and Eluvangal comes to an end today. Pathanamthitta police chief PT Narayanan in his report to the District Collector has said the ban order on people gathering in groups of more than four should be extended. Extension of a similar ban at Erumely in Kottayam district has also been proposed.
The ban order for a week after the shrine opened for Mandalam-Makaravilakku season on November 16 comes to an end, forcing the district authorities to take a decision today itself. The ban was imposed, following the violent protests when the shrine opened after the September 28 verdict allowing women of all ages to worship there.
However, the tahsildar's report earlier in the day was against continuing the ban. A decision would be taken later in the day.
