Kerala High Court today stayed the disqualification of Muslim League leader KM Shaji as legislator of Azhikode.
A few hours after it pronounced the disqualification verdict on grounds that he had tried to incite communal divide, the court stayed the order for two weeks to give him time to move the Supreme Court.
The earlier verdict disqualifying Shaji had directed that fresh election be held. The petition was filed by MV Nikeshkumar, the son of former CMP minister MV Raghavan, who had contested as the CPM candidate and lost to Shaji. The court refused to accept his plea to be declared the winner.
