Kerala High Court on Friday disqualified KM Shaji, the Muslim League MLA represents Azhikkode constituency, and ordered re-election.
The verdict was on a plea filed by MV Nikeshkumar, son of former minister late MV Ragahavan and CPM candidate who lost from Azhikode. He had alleged that Shaji spread communal discord.
The Bench of Justice PD Rajan acknowledged the allegation of Nikeshkumar, who was also the main opponent in the election, that Shaji had incited communal discord among voters during his election campaign. Shaji said he would approach court for a stay.
League national secretary said this was not the final verdict and Shaji failed to prove his innocence. He added that the said notice to spread communal discord was put out by those who wanted to tarnish the image of the party. Legal recourse would be taken “to correct the mistake”, he added.
