Temple to be closed for ‘cleansing’ if women enter, Sabarimala priest tells police

Tension prevails as Sabarimala shrine opens for a day at 5 pm on Monday as part of ‘Chithira Aatta Vishesham’ amidst tight security.

The temple priest (melsanthi) Unnikrishnan Namboodiri is learned told the police incharge of security operations in and around the shrine that the temple would have to be closed for cleansing rituals if women in the 10-50 age group came to the shrine which was against customs.

Police are in huge numbers as there are intelligence reports that the BJP-RSS protests to prevent entry of women would be prevented at all costs.

Inspector General Ajith Kumar met Unnikrishnan at Sannidhanam early on Monday and he told him that he was awaiting directives from tantri (chief priest) Kantaru Rajeevaru who was expected any time at the temple.
