Govt invites Sabarimala tantris to talks for implementing SC verdict

As the protest against the Supreme Court verdict allowing women of all age groups to worship at Sabarimala is getting intensified, the State Government has convened a meeting with the family of the tantri (temple head priest) as part of initiating steps to implement the Supreme Court verdict from this season.

The government invitation to the tantri family, according to CPIM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, should not be seen as any climbing down on the stand. It was to create a consensus on implementing the verdict, he added. Kodiyeri dropped a bombshell when he said the Sunni sect of Muslims should allow women to enter their mosques. Muslim League state secretary KPA Majeed retorted saying it was for believers to moot this idea and not Kodiyeri who was not a believer.

Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran has invited the tantri family for talks later in the day, following a decision taken by the CPIM state secretariat. Tantris Kandararu Rajeevararu, Kandararu Mohanararu and Kandararu Mahesh Mohanararu have been invited to the talks. Travancore Devaswom Board president A Padmakumar and members are also expected to attend the meeting.
