The visit of a priest to the convent housing the nuns who raised their voice against Jalandhar ex-bishop Franco Mulakkal, accused of raping a nun, turned murkier when it was found that he was accompanied by a murder accused.
Kodanad parish priest Fr Nicholas Maniparambil visited the convent of Missionaries of Jesus at Kuravilangad where the victim too resides. Sr Anupama, who led the team of five nuns in the protest demanding arrest of Franco, said Fr Nicholas came to influence the nuns there. He is said to have intervened in the case. He is of the parish of the complainant nun’s family. He earlier supported the nun initially, but later switched over to back Franco.
But things turned worse when it was revealed that he was accompanied by Saji Mookkannur, the accused in the murder of Thommi alias Thomas in 2011.
Saji had a dispute over chicken sale with Thommi and is accused of hiring a Chennai-based quotation team for the murder. He was in custody for 60 days in the case which is still under trial.
He drove the vehicle for the priest and also went into the convent where he was introduced as a member of the priest's parish.
Fr. Nicholas today told mediapersons today that he was not aware of Saji's antecedents as a murder accused.
