Cops to seek confidential testimony from nuns in Franco rape case

The probe team is seeking confidential testimony from the five nuns of the Missionaries of Jesus convent at Kuruvilangad in the Jalandhar ex-bishop Franco Mulakkal case of raping a nun.

According to sources, the move comes in the wake of fears that the nuns, residing with the victim nun, may be influenced. With Franco already in judicial custody and moving a bail petition in Kerala High Court, police seem to want completion of the matter before he comes out in case he is granted bail.

Incidentally, Fr Nicholas Maniparambil of Kodanad parish who had after deposing against Franco before the police turned coat and was now a staunch supporter of the accused, visited the convent today. This has raised suspicion. Fr Nicholas told media persons that his was an official visit, something he did frequently.

Nuns at the convent said they were firm on their stand. Sr Anupama told mediapersons that their participation in a public 14-day protest demanding arrest of Franco had put pressure on them and they would not succumb.

Franco's bail plea in Kerala High Court is to come up for hearing on October 3.
