Jalandhar bishop Franco Mulakkal, accused of raping a nun, was today questioned for seven hours and the exercise will continue tomorrow too.
The bishop was summoned by the investigation team headed by DySp K Subash for questioning after a marathon nine-hour one in Jalandhar on August 14.
The bishop arrived at the venue, the high-tech cell of the Crime Branch at Tripunithura, a few minutes before 11 pm. While leaving after the interrogation, a few All India Youth Federation, the youth wing of the CPI, raised black flags and demanded his arrest.
According to Kottayam Superintendent of Police Harisankar, the bishop cooperated with the questioning and was issued a summons to be present tomorrow too.
The bishop is said to have maintained that he was innocent and claimed he did not stay at the convent on the days the nun mentioned.
It is learnt that when the bishop raised personal charges against the nun, he was asked to give answer only to questions posed to him.
Prior to the questioning, top police officials led by Inspector General Vijay Sakhre, Harishankar, Subhash and members of the probe team held a meeting at the IG’s office in Kochi.
An FIR was registered against the bishop and a more than 100-page statement was taken from the nun and other inmates of the convent.
The bishop has earlier moved Kerala High Court seeking anticipatory bail. However, the court deferred the hearing to September 25.
