Pressure mounted on the CPIM-led Government in Kerala to take action against Jalandhar bishop Franco Mulakkal, facing charges of raping a nun as the joint council of the laity demanding the bishop's arrest shot out a letter to CPIM general secretary Sitaram Yechuri.
The five nuns, part of agitation against the inaction of the authorities, asserted that they would continue with their protest till the bishop was arrested. Yechuri is learnt to have passed on the letter to party State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and sought immediate action. They alleged that despite the government admitting in the High Court last month that the bishop would be arrested immediately, no action had been taken so far, suspecting that the government was hand in glove with the bishop.
Refuting charges of the Missionaries of Jesus of which the victim nun is a member, the nuns said there were no external forces behind their protest. They felt that bishop Franco was behind making such an allegation. Regarding the charges levelled against them and the victim, they said they would formally make a complaint.
Separately, the relatives of the nun are said to have details moving the High Court. They are awaiting for the outcome of the High Court intervention based on a public interest litigation which is to come up for further hearing on Thursday. UNI
