The harthal call given by Congress-led United Democratic Front on Monday against the rising fuel price has seen dissent from within.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee vice-president VD Satheesan, MLA, said the harthal was inappropriate in the backdrop of the State struggling to come to terms with the devastating floods.
While this saw some leaders ask Sateeshan to follow the party decision, he stood by his stand. It was with great difficulty that he succeeded in ensuring that the front left Parur and Kalamassery areas out of the harthal as relief operations were on.
He added that he was basically against harthals.
Muslim League leader MK Muneer also went public saying Kerala should have been spared of the harthal as it was still under the flood impact. He said he had raised this issue within the party. However, he felt there had to be some other form of protest as rising fuel price was a serious matter of concern.
The LDF, which has also called a dawn-to-dusk harthal against the 'anti-people’ policies of the NDA Government, said people had been advised to ensure smooth relief operations.
