Nuns take to streets, join protest in Kochi for Jalandhar bishop arrest

Kochi, Sept 08: Kochi witnessed a surprising and quite unprecedented sight where nuns joined in the protest and took to the streets demanding immediate arrest of Jalandhar bishop Franco Mulakkal, accused of raping a nun.

The protest on Saturday outside Kerala High Court saw nuns from Kuruvilangad convent join to lead the protest by a section of the laity. The victim belongs to the convent.

“We stand strongly with our sister who has been wronged. It is said that there is an attempt to protect the bishop. We will not back out and demand his immediate arrest,” said one of the nuns in the sit-in protest led by the Kerala Church Reformation Movement.

The bishop found himself on a sticky wicket when a former nun testified before the probe panel two days ago that the bishop had misbehaved with her too and hugged and touched her in an appropriate manner and that she left the Church because of him. Two other nuns too testified against his misbehaviour towards nuns.

It was on August 14 that the probe team ended its marathon nine-hour questioning of the bishop in Jalandhar. That day the State Government submitted to the High Court that the bishop would be arrested immediately.
