Floods: Arts fest, IFFK withdrawal leaves Minister Balan sore

The duel among Ministers in Kerala over flood-related issues continue to overflow. The Government decision on Tuesday to do away with school arts festival (kalotsavam) and the international film festival (IFFK) has seen Electricity Minister AK Balan voice his protest.

Yesterday, it was PWD Minister G Sudhakaran turning against Finance Minister Thomas Isaac over failure to drain water from Kuttanad.

While there were rumours of doing away with the festival this year, the Director of Public Instruction in the morning said there was no such move. But soon came the Government order doing away with the festival's as also the annual Nehru Boat Race in Alappuzha.

Higher Education Minister KT Jaleel said the order was on the basis of the Government decision to do away with festivities this year in the wake of the flood. Since the funds for these were met by the Government, the amount would be diverted towards flood relief.

However, Balan, who was to hold a meeting in connection with IFFK, is said to have written to the Chief Secretary suggesting that the school festival be conducted on a small scale.

Also, it was pointed out that even after Ockhi, the boat race was held.

The CPM students’ wing SFI also came out against the Government decision as not holding the festival would deprive the students of the grace marks

It was argued that there was no such Cabinet decision and the present order came as a bolt from the blue.
