The team probing the case against Jalandhar bishop Franco Mulakkal, accused of raping a nun, is likely to summon him as dates of his visit to Kerala were said to be false.
The team is believed to have taken the statement of the nun with regard to the difference in the dates of Franco’s visit to St Francis Mission House in Kuravilangad, where the nun was allegedly raped 13 times. These dates were crucial, according to sources, for further action against the bishop.
The summoning of the bishop and further action leading to arrest would be decided after a high-level meeting sometime this week to review the progress of the probe.
In a relative incident, the priest accused of contacting the nun to ‘settle’ the case by offering benefits reportedly told the police that the bishop had contacted him through a Kothamangalam native Shobi George.
Priest James Erthayil, who was later removed from important position, said Shobi suggested that the nun be promised a 10-acre plot and a convent if she withdrew the complaint. He added that he was not in direct contact with the bishop though he was well acquainted with Shobi. The probe team is to record the statement of Shobi very soon.
