Puducherry annnounces Rs 1 crore aid to Kerala

Puducherry, Aug 10: Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Puducherry V Narayanaswamy on Saturday announced Rs 1 crore to the flood-ravaged Kerala for relief and rehabilitation of the affected people.

The Chief Minister had pledged this assistance as Mahe, an enclave of the Union Territory, close to Kozhikode and Kannur and the State reeling under the the heaviest rains in 62 years .

The impact is felt in Tamil Nadu as water from Mullaperiyar is flowing into the western districts of the State.

Meanwhile, actor Kamal Hassan has announced Rs 25  lakh to Kerala Chief Minister’s fund for flood relief. Fellow actors Surya and Karthi have also announced similar assistance.

In a related development, the Mettur dam has reached the full tank level for the second time in a fortnight on Saturday, following heavy inflow from the reservoirs of Karnataka and Kerala. Authorities have issued flood alert in the Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Tiruchi and Ariyalur, besides in the western districts of Bhavani, Erode, Namakkal and Salem.

Dams in the southern Tirunelveli have also filled thanks to heavy rains in the western ghats and Courtalam falls has been to closed to visitors. Similarly, Hogenekkal is also in spate and officials allowed pilgrims to bathe only in the river downstream to pay their ancestors on the occasion of Aadi ammavasai.
