Kochi airport lifts suspension on arrivals after 2 hours

Kochi, Aug 09: Cochin international airport has lifted the suspension of arrival operations imposed this afternoon. Authorities announced that operations were normal from 3 pm.

The decision was taken after a meeting was held around 2.30 pm to assess the situation. Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) authorities had earlier announced the suspension of arrival of domestic and international flights from 1.10 pm in the wake of opening of Idamalayar dam this morning and subsequently trial run of Idukki dam. They had clarified then that takeoff operations would continue.

The airport at Nedumbassery near Aluva has been a flood-prone area. With the opening of the shutters of Idalamayar dam, water gushed through the Periyar. In the wake of the trial run of the opening of the Cheruthoni dam, part of the Idukki dam, for the first time after 25 years at 12.30 pm, there would be greater flow of water by evening.

In 1992 when Cheruthoni dam shutters were opened, water gushed to the airport runway affecting its operations.

But this time, the Chengal canal passing near the airport has been cleared and necessary diversions made to ensure easy flow of water without affecting airport operations, authorities said.
