CPM leader EP Jayarajan appears all set to return to the Kerala Cabinet, nearly two years after he had to quit in the wake of nepotism charge over appointment of his nephew.
But with the vigilance giving him a clean chit, steps were on by the party to bring him back. This got a push when NCP leader A K Saseendran returned to the Cabinet after he had to bow out over a phone call issue.
An emergency meeting of the CPM state committee and secretariat has been called on Friday where the reinduction of Jayarajan would get the nod. A meeting of the Left Democratic Front is to be held on Monday for getting the reinduction a go-ahead.
But Jayarajan’s return may not be a smooth affair with the CPI being left sore. Since the none of the ministers is likely to be dropped, including Power Minister M M Mani who replaced Jayarajan, the number of ministers would go up to 20. The second largest partner in LDF would rightly want to stake claim for a fifth berth.
Political grapevine has it that CPM would hold discussions with CPI and there is the likelihood of the creation of the post of chief whip with Cabinet rank to be offered to CPI. Since Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is to leave for the US for treatment on August 17, the swearing-in would happen before that.
The LDF meeting would also discuss who would have to be in-charge in Pinarayi's absence. There could be a reshuffle of portfolio with Jayarajan likely to get back Industries Ministry.
